I work specifically with mission-driven organizations: social impact startups, nonprofits, and B-Corps that are scaling and running into the wall where everything lives in someone’s head and the CEO/ED answers everyone’s questions all of the time. That's the moment I find most interesting, and where I think I can be most useful. My background is a little unusual for this kind of work. I've practiced law, served as General Counsel at a tech startup, and spent years as a Lean Process Improvement Specialist at the City of Detroit, where I helped plan, operate, and track over 140 projects funded by an $826M federal grant. I've worked in environments where the stakes were high, the resources were constrained, and "we've always done it this way" didn’t stand a chance. What I've learned across all of it: most operational problems aren't people problems. They're system problems. And fixing the system almost always makes people's jobs easier and their work more meaningful. I take the work seriously. I don't take myself too seriously. I'll skip the jargon, give you a straight read on what's working and what isn't, and focus on building something that keeps running after I'm gone. Outside of work, you'll find me immersed in the culture of Detroit, with my wife Nishaat and our best friend/dog, Dave Anderson. I enjoy exploring the city's food and drink scene, cooking and making cocktails at home, international travel, and recording music in my home studio.
